Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata. His parents named him Narendra Nath Datta. He was a brilliant and curious child who excelled in studies, music, sports, and debates. He was also interested in spirituality and religion from a young age.
He graduated from Calcutta University in 1884 and joined the Brahmo Samaj, a reformist movement that challenged the orthodox practices of Hinduism. He was searching for the true meaning of life and God. He asked many religious leaders if they had seen God, but none could satisfy him.
Finally, he met Sri Ramakrishna, a saint who lived in Dakshineswar near Kolkata. Sri Ramakrishna had experienced God in various forms and religions. He accepted Narendra as his disciple and taught him the essence of Vedanta, the philosophy of Hinduism. He also trained him to renounce worldly attachments and dedicate his life to God and humanity.
After Sri Ramakrishna's death in 1886, Narendra and his fellow disciples took monastic vows and formed the Ramakrishna Order. Narendra became Swami Vivekananda, which means \"the bliss of discerning wisdom\". He travelled across India as a wandering monk, serving the poor and spreading the message of Vedanta.
In 1893, he went to America to represent Hinduism at the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago. There, he delivered a historic speech that stunned the audience with his eloquence and erudition. He said, \"Sisters and brothers of America\", and received a standing ovation. He spoke about the unity of all religions and the need for harmony and tolerance.
He became an instant celebrity and was invited to give lectures and classes all over America and Europe. He also founded the Vedanta Society in New York and London to propagate Vedanta in the West. He inspired many people with his charisma and wisdom, including famous personalities like Nikola Tesla, William James, Sarah Bernhardt, and Romain Rolland. ec8f644aee
